Specialties are dice you get to roll under certain circumstances. Usually, you have a Specialty for a particular Skill. For example, you might have a +2 Specialty to swimming. Every time you roll Athletics for a roll involving swimming, you get to roll 2 extra dice. Normally you roll those dice any time the Specialty applies and you would normally roll the dice for the Skill it’s attached to. Every now and then, you’ll roll those Specialty dice by themselves or with something else. For example, swimming Specialty dice can be rolled with Resolve & Endurance to see how long you can hold your breath, but you don’t get to include your normal Athletics dice.
Items can also have Specialties. Armor often has Specialties against certain types of damage, for example – such as chainmail’s Specialty against slashing damage. Weapons can have Specialties against certain kinds of armor – such as the estoc’s Specialty against heavy armor.
